Check valves from Bray Controls Benelux: reliable non-return valves for industrial flow protection
In many industrial processes, flow must move in one direction. Reverse flow can damage pumps, disrupt production, contaminate media, and cause dangerous pressure events. Check valves, also known as non-return valves, are designed to automatically prevent reverse flow and support safe, stable operation in piping networks.
With the check valve portfolio from Bray Controls Benelux, you can specify dependable backflow protection for utilities and process-critical lines across a wide range of industries.
What are check valves and how do they work?
A check valve is an automatic valve that opens with forward flow and closes when flow stops or reverses. Check valves work by using the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet to operate the closing element. When forward pressure is sufficient, the valve opens and allows media to pass freely along the flow path. When flow stops or reverses, closing the valve happens automatically, without any external control signal.
Unlike manually operated isolation valves, a check valve uses the pressure and flow direction themselves to operate, helping protect equipment and preventing unwanted reverse flow. When correctly selected, check valves also help reduce the risk of water hammer, improve system efficiency, and extend component life.
The speed at which a check valve closes is an important performance characteristic. A valve that closes too slowly allows a significant volume of reverse flow before shutoff is achieved, which can cause water hammer or equipment damage. A valve that closes too quickly may generate pressure surges of its own. Selecting the right closing mechanism for the system's flow characteristics is therefore a key part of the specification process.
Types of check valves
Different piping systems require different check valve mechanisms. Valves are commonly selected based on their closing element design and installation requirements.
A disc check valve uses a flat or spring-loaded disc to block reverse flow. This design is compact, responds quickly to flow changes, and is well suited for systems where fast closure is important. The spring loading allows the disc to begin closing before reverse flow develops, which reduces the risk of slam and pressure surges. Disc check valves are widely used in HVAC, water treatment, and industrial process systems.
A ball check valve uses a spherical element that seals against a seat when flow reverses. This design is effective in applications with viscous media or where a simple, robust mechanism is preferred. The ball lifts freely under forward flow and drops back onto the seat when flow stops, providing a reliable and self-cleaning sealing action. Ball check valves are commonly used in chemical dosing, wastewater, and slurry applications.
A swing check valve uses a hinged disc that swings open under forward flow and closes by gravity or spring action when flow reverses. This design is suited for lower-velocity systems and horizontal or vertical pipelines where the hinge can operate freely. Swing check valves are often selected for larger pipeline sizes where the low pressure drop and simple construction are advantageous.
Both wafer and flanged end configurations are available across the check valve range. Wafer check valves are compact and lightweight, fitting between standard pipeline flanges and minimizing installation space. Flanged check valves provide a more traditional end connection and are preferred where pipeline standards specify flanged joints or where the valve needs to be easily removed for inspection.
Material selection for check valves
The body, disc, seat, and seal materials of a check valve must be compatible with the media, pressure, and temperature of the application. Common body materials include cast iron, ductile iron, carbon steel, and stainless steel. Stainless steel is often specified for corrosive media, hygienic applications, or outdoor installations where long-term corrosion resistance is important. For aggressive chemical environments, specialist alloys or non-metallic materials such as PVC may be required.
Seat and seal materials are selected for chemical compatibility and temperature resistance. EPDM is widely used for water and HVAC applications, while FKM provides improved resistance to hydrocarbons and aggressive chemicals. PTFE is chosen for near-universal chemical compatibility and low-friction performance.
Applications
Bray check valves are used in pump discharge protection, cooling water and utility loops, chemical and process skids, compressed air and industrial gas lines, tank storage manifolds, water treatment and distribution networks, and general industrial pipework, anywhere backflow could damage equipment, destabilize the process, contaminate product, or increase operational risk.
In pump systems, check valves are typically installed on the discharge side to prevent reverse flow through the pump when it is stopped or when a pressure surge occurs upstream. This protects the pump impeller and seals from reverse rotation and reduces the risk of damage during startup and shutdown cycles.
In systems with multiple parallel pumps, check valves on each discharge line prevent backflow through idle pumps when other units are running. This is a common requirement in water treatment plants, cooling systems, and industrial process installations.
Services that support check valve selection and lifecycle performance
A check valve is only reliable when it is correctly selected for flow regime, pressure, installation space, and media characteristics.

Industries and applications where check valves are used
Check valves appear in almost every process industry, but they are especially critical in systems with pumps, pressure changes, and safety requirements.
- Water technology: backflow prevention supports treatment reliability, distribution stability, and equipment protection in municipal and industrial systems.
- Chemical industry: check valves help prevent reverse mixing, contamination, and damage in chemical processing and transfer lines.
- Oil & gas: non-return protection supports safe operation in pipelines, skids, and utility systems where flow direction control is critical.
- Industrial gas: reliable closure behavior supports stable operation in gas production and handling systems.
- HVAC and power industry: check valves help protect pumps and maintain stable circulation in HVAC and district energy networks and many power-utility subsystems.
- Pulp & paper, food & beverage, pharma & biotech, semiconductor, tank storage: across these sectors, check valves protect equipment, reduce process risk, and support predictable operation in both utilities and process lines.
